VIDEO: How To Do A Dumbbell Snatch

How do you do the dumbbell snatch? And more importantly, when is it a useful exercise?

My favourite reason to use the dumbbell snatch is to develop shoulder stability in a dynamic environment.

The fact that the DB moves so quickly adds a new challenge for the shoulder compared to a slower movement like a shoulder press. That speed requires more body control/shoulder control to start and stop the exercise in the optimal position.

If you play overhead sports like tennis or volleyball, this is a great exercise to build the shoulder control you need. Dumbbell snatches somewhat simulate the speed and force of a spike in volley ball or a serve in tennis. And it does so in a controlled environment that lets the client focus on perfecting technique. For this reason, I’ve had good success using this exercise with clients who experience shoulder pain in overhead sports when combined with a good program.

Just make sure you have great shoulder control with slow movements before working on dynamic exercises like the dumbbell snatch.

Finally, here are a few tips on how to progress the dumbbell snatch from just learning the exercise to incorporating into ever more challenging workouts.
