VIDEO: How To Do A Single Leg Deadlift Exercise

The single leg deadlift exercise is sometimes called a kick stand deadlift or a split stance deadlift. It’s a fabulous exercise to build single leg stability, as well as glute and hamstring strength, in a single leg environment. So how can you do a perfect single leg deadlift exercise?

Over a decade of coaching has shown me how important single leg training is. When it comes to a hinging-movement (think deadlifts, RDL, good mornings, KB swings - things where you are primarily folding at your hips), single leg variations have their challenges.

Single leg RDLs are a terrific option but they have one big limitation. Because the balance demand is so high you can’t add very much load. This is where a single leg deadlift comes into play. You can add substantial loads to the exercise because it’s much easier to balance with both feet on the floor.

Beginners can use the single leg deadlift exercise as a progression toward single leg RDLs as they learn to hinge on one leg. More advanced trainees can use it during certain phases of training to really challenge their single leg strength with heavy loads.

Give it a try.
