VIDEO: The Best Treatment For Back Pain

What's the best treatment for back pain? The best treatment for back pain obviously depends on the specific causes and symptoms that you're facing. But the research is clear. Getting a few basics dialled in can go a long way toward reducing and eliminating pain.

I detail each one in this video: ENJOY!

6 Tips For Treating Back Pain

  1. Learn how to establish a neutral spine position in a variety of situations. This is a safe and powerful position that allows you to take stress off your back.

  2. Build better core endurance. Start with simple movements like front and side planks, back extension holds. Then progress to more complex exercises like bird dogs, dead bugs, hollow body holds, and also make sure you can keep your core fully engaged in basic functional movements like squats and deadlifts.

  3. Know your specific pain triggers. Most people will tend to be sensitive to specific spine movements - perhaps when your spine flexes forward, over-extends backward, bending to one side, or when it deals with compression. Your job is to avoid pain triggers. As I explain in the video, this is the only way to get out of pain. Otherwise, every time you put your spine in a painful position, it's like picking a scab. If you keep picking at it, it will never heal/stop hurting.

  4. Be aware and adopt better postures throughout the day that leave you feeling better, vs. the same or worse. We want to minimize any negative inputs, so that all the positive things you're working on (strengthening, core control, etc.), can actually work.

  5. Get help! If what you're doing isn't working, find a qualified chiro, physio, osteopath or other therapist who can help. But they're not going to be able to fix everything. You'll need to own your back pain, follow the plan, and pay attention to your day to day movement.

  6. Educate yourself. The best starting point I know is a book by Dr. Stewart McGill called "The Back Mechanic". I can't emphasize this enough. If you have back pain, you should read this book - probably more than once. He's a world renowned specialist and has put together a fantastic resource aimed at the average person.
